On January 26 of this year, the American Food and Drug Administration, the FDA, published its approval for the marketing of three new heated tobacco products (HeatSticks) by the manufacturer Philip Morris - SiennaAmber and Bronze - all intended for use with the IQOS device. IQOS was approved for use by the FDA already in 2019, and in July 2020 it was defined by it as a "tobacco product with reduced exposure to chemical substances".

Approval for smoking alternatives to cigarettes is given according to a procedure called MRTP, a procedure that examines tobacco products with different risk potential.

At Philip Morris, they emphasize that IQOS is the first and only tobacco vaping product to receive marketing approval through the procedure.
