PG vs VG E-Liquids, what are the Differences?
PG vs VG E-Liquids, what are the Differences?

PG vs VG E-Liquids, what are the Differences?

PG and VG, or Propylene Glycol and Vegetable Glycerin, are both substances found in many e-liquids. PG is often a colorless liquid used as a preservative across the food industry. VG is a thickening liquid that is also often colorless. Depending on the ratio, these ingredients can dictate the type of experience an e-liquid provides.

What Are the Common Differences between PG and VG in E-Liquids?

Given both VG and PG are ingredients typically found in most e-liquids, encountering an e-liquid containing VG or PG alone could be considered unusual. The type of vaping experience a device provides partially depends upon the e-liquid, and the levels of VG and PG within it. This is commonly known as the VG/PG ratio. Essentially, many e-liquids contain a certain percentage of each substance. For example, an e-liquid could have a combination of 70% VG, 30% PG, or 60% VG, 40% PG.

High PG ratio e-liquids, normally above 60%, provide a stronger flavor. That is because PG is typically a thin substance - meaning it can dissolve quickly, and, because it doesn’t often contain any natural flavor, its use helps to blend the other flavors within the e-liquid.

A higher level of VG in an e-liquid, generally over 60%, often provides less flavor but can provide more vapour. When it comes to VG, this often-thicker substance usually produces more vapor when used as the base for an e-liquid, compared to PG.

E-liquids with around a 50/50 of PG and VG split often offer a smooth vaping experience.

Another common difference between the two substances is the nature of VG and PG. As a synthetic substance, PG often has a longer shelf life. It has been used by food and pharmaceutical companies for years. VG often has a shorter shelf life because it is organic. Normally derived from natural plant oils, VG is also often found in many food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic products.

VG and PG are not usually the only ingredients in e-liquids. Nicotine, for example, is a substance that is usually present in e-liquids.

Nicotine in PG and VG E-Liquids

Nicotine, VG, and PG are all ingredients that are often found in a typical cigarette. The inclusion of nicotine, which is addictive, is one reason why vaping is not risk-free.

Nicotine VG and nicotine PG base products are commonly both available online. However, these are not usually e-liquids by themselves - they are ingredients that adult vapers can use to make their own e-liquid – which may be possible for certain vape devices designed to be used with certain e-liquids in this way. We advise against self-made e-liquids, especially for those adult vapers new to vapes. Instead, check the vape device’s manufacturer guidance to determine which e-liquids are suitable for your device.

Another ingredient found in many e-liquids is the flavorings. These food additives are used to amplify the aroma and taste of a vaping experience. Flavorings are also often used in various food and pharmaceutical products.

Which Device and VG, PG Ratio Is Right for Me?

Fundamentally, the type of device you are using matters when it comes to choosing an e-liquid. Many e-liquids are designed for certain vaping styles, and so are the devices. This means that particular vapes will match particular e-liquids. For example, a high VG e-liquid is likely to go well with a Sub-Ohm vape, for those adult vapers who desire vaping experience. On the other hand, a high PG e-liquid typically works well with most devices – typically providing a stronger flavour.

Does VG and PG Matter in Heated Tobacco?

Heated tobacco works differently to vaping, and these products don’t usually require the use of e-liquid. This means there is no VG or PG to worry about. Instead, heated tobacco devices should heat tobacco instead of burning it, as cigarettes do.

IQOS provides cigarette-like satisfaction*. A high-quality range of heated tobacco devices designed with years of research and expertise, IQOS is worth considering. *** Reductions in levels of a range of harmful chemicals (excluding nicotine) compared to the smoke of a reference cigarette.

Important information: It does not necessarily equal a 95% reduction in risk. IQOS is not risk-free.

While not risk-free, vapes, and heated tobacco devices are better than continued smoking. However, IQOS products are not alternatives to quitting and are not designed as cessation aids. IQOS devices are not risk-free,and they provide nicotine, which is addictive. The best decision any adult smoker can make is to quit nicotine and tobacco consumption entirely.
